Two Manhattan cocktails with cherries on a cloth with stacked books in the background

Manhattan

The Manhattan is such a classic cocktail.  Whiskey and sweet vermouth perked up a little with some bitters and maraschino cherries

I almost feel fancy when I drink one… kinda like Lauren Bacall or Katherine Hepburn

There are versions using Bourbon or various types of whiskey, but like most recipes, I like to use what I have on hand

Assemble your favorite whiskey, sweet vermouth, Angostura bitters and some Maraschino cherries

Note: I was able to find the Angostura bitters at my grocery store in the drink mixer section

Fill cocktail glasses with ice and add a couple of dashes of Angostura bitters, one ounce of sweet vermouth, 2 ounces of whiskey per serving

Why is it called a Manhattan?

Legend has it that this cocktail was invented in the late 1800’s in, yup, you guessed it, Manhattan, NY

Regardless of where it originated, it’s a simple cocktail that apparently can stand the test of time

Stir, toss in a couple of Maraschino cherries and serve!
