Apple Pear Butter is a sweet & tangy spread with the seasonings of cinnamon, cardamom and brown sugar
How can something so simple be so delicious?
I find myself asking that question after making a batch of Apple Pear Butter
It’s not really butter, just so you know, it’s like a concentrated applesauce that cooks down into a sweet, nicely spiced spread
I used a combination of 3 pears and 6 apples. Mainly because it’s what I had
You can use whatever combination of fruit as long as it equals 8 cups
Peel, core and cube the fruit into small chunks
You’ll also need 1 cup of dark brown sugar, 1 cinnamon stick, 1 teaspoon kosher salt and 4 cardamom pods
Cardamom may be difficult to find, so you can omit if you have to. But I highly recommend trying it out as it has a uniquely aromatic flavor
The best way to describe this spice is citrusy & warm with a hint of licorice
Since it’s a robust spice, I cook it in with the apples and pears and remove at the end
Put all of ingredients into a slow cooker on high for 4 hours
We use the Instant Pot slow/pressure cooker
At this point, remove the cardamom pods and the cinnamon stick and reserve
Blend with an immersion blender until smooth
Put the pods and cinnamon stick back into the pureed fruit and cook on high 4 more hours but uncovered
This will let the apple pear mixture cook down into the lovely “butter” you’re so looking forward to slathering on your toast
Once again, remove the cardamom and cinnamon stick since they’re inedible
A thing of beauty. Not too sweet, spiced just right and ready for your breakfast table
Enjoy!!!

This turned out AMAZING! I have never used the cardamom before and it adds such a subtle flavor…delicious! I only used half the amount of sugar and it was perfect with the super-sweet pears I used. Hitting the orchard this week and will definitely make this again. My house smells wonderful!
SO glad you liked it Karen! Happy Fall!
