This is by far one of the most popular recipes on our website.
It’s no wonder… the browned meat combined with the warm spices, the subtle sweetness of the potato and the slight acidity of the tomatoes make this a perfect one pot meal
What is Pakistani Kima?
It may sound exotic but really it’s just a delicious stew typically made with ground meats and vegetables. It can be cooked stovetop, but I love how fast I can make this in my Instant Pot
A little bit of prep, 12 minutes of pressure cooking and you have an amazingly flavorful dinner on the table
I used 1 1/2 pounds of ground turkey (you could use ground beef as well), 1 cup of chopped onion, 3 garlic cloves coarsely chopped & a tablespoon of coconut oil
Saute the onions and garlic in the coconut oil in a pressure cooker for about 5 minutes until softened
Add in the ground meat and saute another 8 minutes until lightly browned
Be sure to drain the excess fat at this point if you’re using ground beef
Now for the stars of the show… The spices!
You’ll need one level tablespoon of curry, 1 teaspoon of kosher salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon of cumin, 1/2 teaspoon of paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of oregano, 1/2 teaspoon of powdered ginger and 2 whole bay leaves
Add all spices to the meat and onion mixture and give a stir to combine
Peel and dice one large sweet potato (about 2 cups), rinse one cup of dried lentils, and measure one cup of broth and one 28 oz can of diced tomatoes with juice
Place all into the instant pot and stir
Close the lid to the instant pot and set for 12 minutes of pressure cooking. Let the steam release naturally and open lid after the pressure has subsided
Remove the bay leaves and discard
Add in a cup of peas and gently stir to combine. Replace the lid and let sit for about 5 minutes until the peas are warmed through
Re-season with kosher salt and black pepper if necessary
We served over white rice with a scallion garnish

Mine turned out to be the best Qeema/keema ever! according to my family. The dish was off the hook.
Thank you Kaash!
Any veg options?
Sure, just omit the ground beef/turkey and replace with ground tofu. There are many great ground tofu options available at the grocery store. You can also omit the ground meat and double the amount of lentils if you’d like. Please let us know which you choose and how it comes out!
Any ideas for stove top and/or oven instructions? Never knew there were electric pressure cookers! Going to Google 🙂
Hi, yes, this can be easily adapted for the stovetop. Follow the same steps for sauteing the onions, garlic and meat, but use a large saucepot on your stove. Once all of the ingredients are mixed in, cover & cook on medium heat for 30-40 minutes or until the potatoes and lentils are cooked through, stirring occasionally. Add in peas at the very end until warmed through. Enjoy!
