Sweet & Sour Meatballs

This is one of those recipes that have been bouncing around my in-laws family for years and years

I mean I first tried these 27 years ago (yes, I’m getting old)

Whether these where made by Grandma Mary, Aunt Liz or my wife, they are always a New Year’s Eve, Super Bowl or cocktail party staple

In fact I’m sure this recipe is one that my niece Megan and my daughter Marin will make for their families one day

Best part?

They are pretty easy to make

Let’s start with the sweet and sour sauce

We will need around 12 ounces of chili sauce, 10 ounces of grape jelly and 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire Sauce

Dump these three ingredients in a saucepan, place over medium heat and let the jelly start to melt down

Whisk to incorporate the ingredients, simmer on low for about 10 minutes, then set aside

Now for the meatballs

I’m using 2 pounds of ground turkey, but feel free to use whatever ground meat you like

We will also need 1 cup of breadcrumbs, 2 large eggs, 1 small onion, about 1/2 cup of fresh chopped parsley and 1 teaspoon each of kosher salt and ground black pepper

Place the ground meat in a large bowl, whisk the eggs and add to the meat

I quartered the onion and added it to a food chopper to get it very fine

Once chopped add this in as well

Next add in the breadcrumb, parsley, salt and pepper

Using your hands gently mix until all ingredients are thoroughly combined

Preheat your oven to 350 F

I line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and using a cookie scoop I start dropping 1 1/2 inch portions of the meat mixture onto the tray

Once all the meat mixture is on the sheet, go back and roll into smooth balls (you can also brown these in a pan if you prefer)

They’re all rolled up and ready to go!

Place in the oven and cook for 20-25 minutes, or until they are nicely browned and firm

Remove and set aside to rest for 10 minutes

Place the meatballs in a large bowl

Pour your sweet and sour sauce over them

Gently fold the meat and sauce to completely cover them

Place these back into your sauce pan and simmer on low for 1/2 hour to allow the sauce to thicken and the flavors to meld

Or you can put them into the slow cooker on low for a couple hours for the same effect, which is what I’m going to do

Serve them and dive in!
