Autumn Apple Cocktail

A mix of crisp Autumn inspired flavors that come together to make one delicious cocktail!

There’s a slight chill in the air here in NY and our leaves are changing color with a beautiful display of reds, oranges and yellows.  What better time of year to enjoy this crisp apple cider cocktail!

I think what makes this cocktail taste as good as it does, is the addition of maple simple syrup.  It adds such a warm flavor.  There’s a lot going on in this glass… crisp cider, herbaceous gin, tart lemon and well, bitter Angostura bitters.  All of the flavors come together in a harmonious way for one delicious drink!

What is simple syrup?

Typically, simple syrup is a mixture of one part water to one part white sugar that has been dissolved.  The syrup can be infused with many different flavors such as rosemary, berries, even cucumbers to make an interesting addition to a cocktail.  Honey simple syrup can also be used in drinks.  Combining equal parts of good quality maple syrup and water give a distinct maple flavor without overpowering the drink with sweetness.  You can dissolve the maple syrup in warm water and then chill before making the cocktail or vigorously shake the maple-water mixture in a tightly closed jar

To a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add 2 ounces of gin, 2 ounces of apple cider, 1/2 ounce of fresh lemon juice, 1/2 ounce of maple simple syrup & 1-2 dashes of Angostura bitters.  Shake well

Don’t skip the bitters.  According to Epicurious, “Bitters are to cocktails as salt is to food, they improve and align flavors just like salt does; they help to accentuate flavor and they bring their own flavors.”
